Ducted air conditioning systems are a fantastic way to keep your entire home comfortable year-round. They provide consistent temperature control across multiple rooms, all from one central unit. But if you’re considering getting one installed, you might be wondering, “What does the installation process actually involve?”
Don’t worry — while it’s a big job, understanding the process in simple terms can help you feel more prepared. Let’s walk through the typical steps of a ducted air conditioner installation.
Before any work begins, one of our air conditioning experts will visit your home to assess your cooling and heating needs. During this consultation, they’ll measure your space, check your roof or ceiling cavity, and discuss your specific requirements, like which rooms you want to be cooled or heated. This is crucial for determining the right size and capacity of the system for your home.
Once the assessment is complete, the technician will design a custom ductwork layout for your home. Ductwork refers to the network of insulated pipes that distribute air throughout your house. The layout design ensures that every room gets adequate airflow and that the system operates efficiently. This step involves planning where the ducts, vents, and central unit will be installed.
On installation day, the first task is to prepare your home for the installation. This might include clearing out your ceiling space where the ducts and central unit will be installed. The technicians may also lay down protective coverings to prevent any damage to your floors or furniture during the installation process.
The heart of a ducted air conditioning system is the indoor unit, often installed in the ceiling or under the floor. This unit is responsible for cooling or heating the air before it gets distributed throughout your home. The installation team will securely mount the indoor unit in the designated space, ensuring it’s properly insulated and ventilated.
The outdoor unit works in tandem with the indoor unit to regulate your home’s temperature. It’s typically installed outside your home, either on the ground or mounted on a wall. The outdoor unit is connected to the indoor unit via refrigerant piping, which the technicians will carefully run between the two components. This step also involves connecting the unit to your electrical system.
Now comes the task of installing the ductwork. The pre-designed ducts are run from the indoor unit to various rooms in your home. These ducts are usually hidden in the ceiling, so they’re out of sight. Vents or grilles are installed in each room where the air will be released. The goal is to ensure that each room receives the right amount of airflow for balanced cooling or heating.
The control system is the “brain” of your ducted air conditioner. This is usually a wall-mounted thermostat or a remote control panel that allows you to set the temperature and control airflow to different zones in your home. The installation team will set up this control system and show you how to use it, ensuring you can easily manage your new system.
Once everything is installed, the technicians will thoroughly test the system to ensure it’s working correctly. They’ll check for any leaks, make sure the airflow is balanced in all rooms, and confirm that the temperature control is accurate. This testing phase is critical to ensuring that your new ducted system operates efficiently and effectively.
After testing, the technicians will do a final walkthrough with you. They’ll explain how to use the system, including how to set the temperature, use the control panel, and perform basic maintenance. They’ll also answer any questions you might have and ensure you’re comfortable with your new ducted air conditioner.
Our install partners offer post-installation support, which may include follow-up visits to check the system’s performance or provide additional guidance on using it. Knowing that help is available if needed can give you peace of mind and ensure your system continues to run smoothly.
While installing a ducted air conditioner is a significant project, understanding the process can make it feel much more manageable. From the initial assessment to the final walkthrough, each step is designed to ensure that your home is outfitted with a system that keeps you comfortable in every season.
